Noah’s Ark [Noakin arkki] is the first block of flats built to Finland. The building is the only realised part of a larger housing plan designed by military architect Augustin Ehrensvärd. It was completed in 1771. The restoration of the building was designed by Kari Järvinen and Merja Nieminen Architects. The restoration was completed in 2011.
Extract from the Finnish Architecture 2010-2011 jury report by Jari Frondelius:
“The unique character of Noah’s Ark has called for a special level of understanding and expertise, indeed skills comparable to those of a surgeon.”
